How often should I visit the dentist?
It is recommended that children and adults visit the dentist every six months to ensure that their gums and teeth stay healthy.

What should I expect when I go to the dentist?
If you are going to the dentist for a regular checkup, we will clean your teeth professionally, scaling all of the tartar and plaque that has built up on your teeth. You may also need X-rays, depending on when the last time you had them was. If you have not been to the dentist recently, we will want to go over your medical history with you.

After your teeth are clean, we will do a thorough examination of your teeth and gums. If you are having any problems, we will use this time to discuss them with you. We will also talk to you about what you are doing at home to keep your mouth healthy.

What is plaque and why is it bad?
Plaque is clear and sticky bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. As plaque collects, it forms a hard layer called tartar. This typically forms in hard-to-reach areas near the gum line.

Bacteria found in plaque creates toxic chemicals that irritate the gums. These bacteria eventually can destroy the teeth which is known as gum disease. Gum disease can also be linked to other health problems such as heart disease, stroke, pneumonia, and some pregnancy complications.

What causes bad breath?
Bad breath can be linked to many systemic diseases, though most bad breath originates in the mouth. A dry mouth or low salivary flow can influence bad odor in the mouth. There are two main steps in managing bad breath. First, we need to control the bacteria that produces the sulfur compounds, and then we have to neutralize it.

Why should I visit the dentist two times per year?
Plaque builds up over time and this sticky bacterial film can solidify and end up turning into calculus or tartar. This substance can actually be cleaned off during a regular cleaning visit. If you come in every six months, this will keep your mouth healthy and clean and will allow potential problems to be found and diagnosed earlier.
